Breast Milk Storage Guidelines for Hospitals
In a hospital environment, Expressed Breast Milk and colostrum must be stored exclusively in designated medical-grade refrigerators and freezers to ensure safety and quality.
Storage Durations & Temperature Requirements:
- Freshly expressed breast milk: Can be stored in a medical-grade breast milk refrigerator (≤4°C) for up to 72 hours.
- Thawed breast milk: Must be used within 24 hours.
- Long-term storage: A breast milk freezer (-20°C or colder) can preserve expressed breast milk for 6 to 12 months.
Defrosting & Warming Guidelines:
- Frozen expressed breast milk should be thawed in a breast milk refrigerator at ≤4°C over 24 hours before use.
- Once thawed, milk can be safely warmed using hospital-grade breast milk warmers, ensuring it is ready for consumption.
